The Art of the Autumn Table
Autumn entertaining doesn’t have to mean an elaborate dinner party or a perfectly styled table. In fact, we think it’s better when it doesn’t.
Start with what you already have.
A wooden table. Linen napkins that don’t quite match. A few branches clipped from the yard. A bottle of wine opened before everyone arrives. Something simmering in the kitchen and music playing quietly in the background.
Add a basket of bread, a simple seasonal meal, and enough chairs for whoever happens to stay.
That’s our kind of entertaining.
The beauty of an autumn gathering is in its warmth rather than its perfection. It’s the sound of conversation carrying across the table. Someone pouring another glass. A dog sleeping beneath a chair. A sweater draped over the back of another.
It’s dinner turning into dessert, dessert turning into coffee, and no one quite remembering when the sun went down.
Bring the Gathering Outside
Summer doesn’t have to get the last word when it comes to outdoor entertaining.
Some of the loveliest evenings of the year happen when there’s just enough chill in the air to make everyone pull their chairs a little closer.
Keep the grill going. Bring out the blankets. Add lanterns, candles, or a strand of lights overhead. Serve something hearty alongside the last tomatoes from the garden, open a favorite bottle, and let the evening unfold.
Autumn has a way of making even the simplest backyard gathering feel special.
And if dinner eventually moves beside the fire? Even better.
